Amrus was born in Medan, Sumatera Utara at 21st of October 1933. He studied art in ASRI Yogyakarta. His artworks are mainly sculptures and paintings. His sculptures have unique feature as he always put Batak (Sumatran Ethnic group) elements with focus on realism. He is known for working on the theme of social and people strive. His work has been featured in many exhibitions such as in Vienna, Asian-African Conference, and Indonesian National Gallery. In 1998, His work was awarded as the best sculpture at the Contemporary Sculpture Triennale exhibition in Jakarta.
